In-line Actuators in the Food Industry - January 2009

In the food industry, electric actuators are replacing pneumatic solutions in process lines and special machines to an increasing degree. The Danish manufacturer, Concens A/S in Denmark, is successful with their in-line actuators in the food industry as the actuators have some very obvious advantages and are considerably cheaper solutions than the traditional pneumatic solutions.

The production processes constantly change especially in the food industry where demands are placed on, e.g. varying package sizes, automatic processes and flexible production lines. At the same time, the industry works constantly on a higher throughput on processing and packing lines.
Until a few years ago, pneumatic solutions were predominant, but the traditional pneumatic solutions face problems in connection with the flexibility and precision that is required by the food industry today. In addition to far greater flexibility, the actuator solutions provide considerable advantages through, e.g. avoiding expensive pressurised air installations as well as a quiet production environment.

New Design Provided 25-30% Savings on Special Machine - Article, February 2008

Gerber Technology, a division of Gerber Scientific A/S in Denmark which develops and manufactures spreading machines for the textile industry has gained large competitive advantages through a development project on an existing machine. In addition to significant cost savings, the company has developed a more solid and robust machine with a modern and ergonomic design.

At Gerber Technology, there is comprehensive experience with the production of spreading machines and an ongoing product development has ensured the company a leading position on the market around the world. On an annual basis, the company produces almost 350 machines to continents all over the world.
A good example of a successful development project at Gerber Technology is the extensive re-design of their “large” XLs125 spreading machine. A product committee comprising management, engineering, sales and service had defined the dimensions beforehand, which among other things, prescribed the integration of a completely new control, a more ergonomic design, a more solid construction and all of this at a considerably lower cost price. The comprehensive task was given to the development team under the manager for mechanical development, Kim Svane Brinch, who, in August 2006, initiated the project at the factory in Denmark.
”To fulfil the goals from the product committee this has meant that we have not focused on doing what we ”usually” do, but that our thoughts have been on new constructions and new components. In relation to the “old” machine, we have made new developments on a number of areas, such as the cutting device and the construction and control of the cradle for the rolls of fabric”, says Kim Svane Brinch.

Stainless and Robust are Keywords at Carnitech, International Manufacturer of Food Processing Machines - Article, August 2008

Carnitech, who produce specialized machinery and process lines for the international fishing and food industry at their factories in Denmark, has more than 25 years experience with combining technological solutions with the strict demands of the wet industry for operational reliability and robust constructions. This is why stainless and robust are keywords at the development department at Carnitech, and this is why the developers feel safe using Concens inline actuators in their solutions.

There are considerable demands to be met when you produce specialized machines and process lines for use on trawlers. The space is minimal, the ship moves in several dimensions, and the equipment is exposed to a very rough environment with saltwater, fish and heavy loads. But Carnitech have achieved a leading position in the market for solutions for trawlers, because their solutions combine technology with robust construction.
“One of our specialized machines is a bi-catch separator for shrimp trawlers, where the shrimp get sorted from the bi-catch. In order to optimize the process it is important that is horizontal while in use. This is why every separator has in-line actuators, which can be set for this.” says Hans-Peter Kristensen, who is a technician specializing in onboard solutions at the development department at Carnitech.
“Actuators have the advantage over pneumatics that they can stop in all positions, and thus give a more precise adjustment. And they are easier to build in and program. This is why we use actuators everywhere in our machines, and concens actuators fulfil our key demand for “stainless and robust””, Hans-Peter Kristensen says.
